Medical marijuana is legal in almost 14 states in the US and this is due to the fact that doctors think that marijuana has therapeutic properties. Under the federal law, growing marijuana, using it or using it in your possession is a criminal offense and for this reason, it's necessary that unless you have your doctor's recommendation to use it, you don't even think about growing this substance at home.
